When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan—Luke 17:14-16 (NIV)

My heart’s so filled with gratitude today, Lord. I’m like that leper who returned to Jesus once he realized he was healed. Leprosy gone and everything being free from leprosy meant for him: being able to return to his home and family and community. Being able to return to work and earn a living again, go to synagogue and enjoy gathering with others. He became a walking, talking, testimony of what the Lord can do for us.

Father, when You bless us in one way it permeates and touches every area of our life; like that pebble thrown into the pond, the waves cascading and rippling out.

Thank You heavenly Father for always being bigger and blessing us bigger than we can ever imagine. Sometimes it feels we are waiting a long time—that leper must have felt that many times during his illness—but You are truly an on-time God! Give us the spirit of perseverance we need to wait patiently in You while You work things out for us. We make ourselves content with things turning out okay, but You never stop short of perfect.

Thank You heavenly Father for perfect blessings. Today I acknowledge that every good and perfect gift comes from You.

Thank You for arranging blessings and solutions for every season of my life. Thank You for the richness of Your love and the vastness of Your covering. Thank You for writing a testimony upon my heart that will touch and inspire others, not just this Thanksgiving but beyond today.

I adore You Father and I thank and praise You for all Your goodness to me and those around me. In the name of Jesus my Lord and Savior, I pray. Amen

I am the LORD, and I do not change—Malachi 3:6 (NLT)

Heavenly Father, in this ever-changing world I find great comfort and assurance knowing You don’t change. We can’t say many things about that. Everything must change. Children are born, but they don’t stay babies; they grow up. Even flowers may start out as tiny buds, but they don’t stay the same, as the sun shines on them, and the rains come they change; they grow and stand strong. The ground beneath our feet shifts and change and so do the skies above our heads.

Your unchanging nature fills me with hope and assurance Lord. Knowing You are consistent in all Your ways—including Your holy Word—gives me a sense of peace. You are not forgiving and merciful one day and the next become harsh and rigid. You don’t love and embrace us one day, and the next go out of Your way to avoid us. Your face consistently shine on use.

I thank You for Your steadfastness in a world that constantly shifts and falters. I pray that my faith is strengthened by the knowledge of Your unchanging nature. Even when I struggle with obedience and consistency You don’t change; when my faith is strong one day and wavering the next, Your love doesn’t change. You’re still forgiving and giving. You don’t hold out Your hand to us one day and then withdraw it the next.

I pray, guide me to reflect Your unchanging love in my life to others. Strengthen my faith that honors You. I am holding fast to the truth that You are the same yesterday, today and forever; knowing that Your love endures forever. This truth has become my refuge, my shelter in the storms of life, my anchor that holds me fast when the world—even my small part of it—is rocking and reeling. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

  Praying the Promise

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, giving thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you—I Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV)

Heavenly Father, something as simple as praying can bring balance and peace to me.

Whether it’s the Lord’s Prayer as Jesus shared with His disciples in the Gospels, one of the prayers I learn through the Scriptures, like the ones David and others wrote in the Psalms, one of St. Paul’s prayers that are powerful and effective, or something as simple as saying the name of Your Son Jesus, I can experience change in my circumstances, but most importantly, I can experience change in myself.

Thank You that I don’t have be positioned on my knees or stationed in a church building. I don’t have to wait until bedtime or at the end of the day. I can pray any time of day or night, anyplace at all and Your Holy presence will join me.

I pray, let prayer rise not only from lips but from my heart. Let my hands that help others also be a prayer without words. May I never lose the connection or intimacy I enjoy with You and heaven by neglecting to pray. May my prayers be creative and life-giving and may I always pray for others as well as myself in a way that promotes and asks for good. Whenever life gets tough may I remember to turn to You in prayer, so I am not led to panic or become discouraged.

May prayer put the parentheses on my days and nights; there’s no better way to spend my day than being in prayer and constant communication with You. Thank You for blessing me with prayer. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

  Praying the Promise

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice—Ephesians 4:31

Heavenly Father, through the teachings and instruction of Jesus Your Son, You warned us to avoid cluttering up our soul and heart with things like unforgiveness and bitterness. These attitudes only weigh us down emotionally and spiritually and keep us separated from Your grace, mercy, and from having peace with You.

Repeatedly in the Scriptures, You highlight that You will take care of our enemies, You will be the one to avenge the wrongs against us, and You will make it clear to those who do harm to us that You will deal with them when the time comes.

Because You have me covered and have made promises to me that You will fulfill, I can move forward in life and in my emotions. I don’t have to seethe or make repaying those who have done any disservice to me my focus. I don’t have to worry over them or spend my days and nights hoping something just as bad will happen to them.

Many in this world do not enjoy the peace that comes from having a clean heart.  Many are weighed down by bitterness and unforgiveness and it is reflected I the way they live life. May my life and the way I live it be an inspiration to others and whenever I am asked how I can be at peace and not be weighed down emotionally or spiritually may I always point them back to You and the joys of following Your ways. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

  Praying the Promise

But Moses said to the LORD, “Please, Lord, I have never been a skilled speaker. Even now, after talking to you, I cannot speak well. I speak slowly and can’t find the best words.”—Exodus 4:10 (NCV)

Heavenly Father, Moses was concerned about being put out in front of the movement to free the slaves. He was willing to do everything [else] You required, but when it came to public speaking, delivering messages in front of others, He wasn’t feeling good about that.

Father, it’s not known by us what speech impediment Moses suffered with. Whether he was someone who stuttered, had trouble getting his words to flow, or if he just had deep-seated feelings of inadequacy. It could have been a combination of all of that. We do know that even after spending time in Your presence he still lacked confidence and dreaded the thought of speaking to people and to Pharaoh.

God, how many times we can identify with Moses! How often we have conditions or feelings of inadequacy that would keep us from total obedience to Your will. We don’t want to anger You, Lord. We ask You to touch and remind us that through You all things are possible and there’s nothing You cannot do with our little, our limitations, our smallest effort.

God, You have not called us or chosen us because we are inadequate in and of ourselves, but You select us to do things for You because we are Yours and You have a plan to accomplish that something through us. From the moment You knit us together I the womb You had a purpose and a plan to use us for Your will.

I pray, take my fears Lord, all my feelings of inadequacy and mold and shape me. I won’t withhold any part of me, I won’t tell You “No”, I won’t hold back or ask You to find someone else, but I’ll trust You Lord!  I’m nowhere near perfect Lord, but I’m Yours. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

Praying the Promise

Some people were talking about the Temple and how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts offered to God—Luke 21:5 (NCV)

Heavenly Father, some of our houses of worship are grand places, like the Temple in Jerusalem when Jesus was on earth. Some are built with beautiful stones, decorated richly inside and out. Our love for Your house motivates us to build it from the best we have and can afford. Whether our physical structures are grand and opulent or modest and simple, may we be careful never to worship the structure.

Lord, it’s so easy to slide into the worship of beautiful things. So easy to find ourselves guilty of worshiping our structures. Making one space sacred and another a shrine; believing the beauty of our physical church can make up for what our heart lacks in worship.

May we never become so enamored with the building that we lose sight of the purpose of their existence, that they are to fulfill the purpose of not only worship, but serving others, and may we never lose sight of the truth that as beautiful as they may be, even they are temporary.

Lord, we pray, keep our hearts fixed on You that as we pass through the temporary, we don’t make gods out of anything and don’t begin to idolize anything, including our church building. Grant that we never lose sight of what is eternal in this materialistic and external focused world. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen

How terrible it will be for people who plan wickedness, who lie on their beds and make evil plans. When morning light comes, they do what they planned, because they have the power to do so—Micah 2:1 (NCV)

Heavenly Father, separate us from the wicked! Open our eyes so we are not blinded or under the influence of those who use their power and position to cause misery and bring harm to others. Even in our planning what we will do when morning comes, keep us from being like those who plot and scheme evil against others. Keep our thoughts and our hearts pure.

Your word promises it will not go well for those who plan wickedness and evil and carry out their actions; they will not be able to save themselves (Micah 2:3). That will be a terrible day and time for the wicked. As Jesus taught it will be a day where the wicked are thrown into outer darkness and where will be loud cries and gnashing of teeth” (Matt. 8:12).

As Your children, let us always live a life of faith and goodness all the days of our life—up until our own death. May we live lives that show and support, we belong to the light and not the dark! Let us refuse to cheat people, to take from others, to rob or cause misery and pain to others, especially when we have the power or upper hand or position to do so, but may we always seek to live righteously and please You in all our ways. In the name of Jesus our kind and loving Savior and Lord, we pray, Amen

Praying the Promise

As Jesus came near Jerusalem, he saw the city and cried for it, saying, “I wish you knew today what would bring you peace. But now its hidden from you—Luke 19:41-42 (NIV)

Heavenly Father, we come today with hearts that are moved by the deep compassion of Jesus who stood on the hill overlooking Jerusalem and wept.

He saw their inability to recognize Him as Your own Son, sent to save them. Because they rejected Him, they also rejected Your grace and mercy. Because they refused to accept You could do something such as come to earth in the flesh, live and walk among them, perform miracles, spend time with sinners and love even the unlovable, they missed every proof of your deity, power, acceptance and unconditional love.

Forgive us, Father that far too often we are blind to Your presence and oblivious to Your will in our lives and world. Forgive us for getting distracted and sucked into the fool’s gold this world offers; for believing that the world’s love, wealth, health and peace is true love, wealth, health, health, and peace. We are blinded by the temporary and immediate and we miss the eternal. We pray, save us from our hardened hearts and our indifference.

Like David expressed, we need a broken and contrite heart and spirit; that is the only thing that’s acceptable to You. We need to cry out for open eyes to see You at work and to see the opportunities You provide for us to walk in Your ways. We thank You that it is not too late for us.

Forgive us for missing the opportunities of yesterday but we praise and thank You for the gift of today where we have a chance to see what’s real and open our heart to Your Son, our Savior and Salvation. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen

Praying the Promise

Jesus, You exampled for us what it means to live with a higher heavenly righteous regard to words and actions; that there really is an interconnection between our words and actions.

Thank You for Your life-giving word that teaches us what it means to embrace the promises of God as ours, how to handle the Word of God correctly, and how to live out what we have learned and believe through Your Word so that our life and being reflect Your nature and heart.

Thank You Jesus for teaching me about the actions, words and thoughts that will be punished and rewarded and for making it clear in Your Word what God approves and what will be judged. It is my desire to please God by the way I conduct my life!

Today’s promise reminds me that what comes out of my mouth and what I do toward others matters. Help me speak and act wisely so I can yield the promised rewards. Help me to speak respectfully and treat others with love. May I be remined daily through Your word and the counsel of Your Holy Spirit that the wise use of words and kind actions can help foster positive relationships and outcomes. When I am tempted to reflect the darkness and negativity of the world around me through my words and actions help me to remember whose and who I am and to take a holy pause before responding and acting.

Praying the Promise

When God saw what the people did, that they stopped doing evil, he changed his mind and did not do what he had warned. He did not punish them.—Jonah 3:10 (NCV)

Merciful God, true repentance occurs when we begin to see from Your point of view the way our sin has broken Your heart. If we want to have victory over sin and turn our lives wholeheartedly over to You, then we must see our sin from Your perspective. Sin alienates us from You and from others. It grieves Your heart and burdens You with sorrow. We pray, show us our sin; help us understand what it does to You. Help us understand Your great love for us, despite how much we have hurt You, grieved Your heart and sin against You. Because it is necessary, test the sincerity of our heart so that even we can recognize how we still cling to our dark nature and return to it over and over.

There is no sermon powerful enough—not even those that highlight the horrors of hell—that will turn us from our sin or be the breaking point or cause true repentance like understanding what our sin does to You. Forgive us, O God, for being slow to see, slow to understand, slow to respond, slow to turn away from sin and turn back to You with sincerity of heart.

Thank you for blessing us with another chance, for restoring us when You see the sincerity of repentance and brokenness of our spirit. When we have become entangled in and corrupted by the darkness of the world around us preach a word of warning to us that we—like those living in Nineveh long ago—can become aware, stop doing evil and change our mind and heart. May our desire to please You and be at peace rule our heart and mind continually. We pray in the name of Jesus our Savior and Redeemer. Amen

Praying the Promise

Jesus answered, “God can do things that are not possible for people to do.”—Luke 18:27 (NCV)

Jesus, thank You for this powerful assurance. I come before You today with a heart full of hope and trust. Bless Your Word that reminds me what is impossible for people is possible with You. This promise opens me up and gives me pause, in the best way.

In moments when I feel overwhelmed, when the path ahead seems blocked, and when my strength fails, help me to remember that You are the God of the impossible. You see beyond my limitations. You work miracles in the quiet and the chaos. You open doors no one can shut and make a way where there seems to be no way. Jesus, I surrender my worries, my dreams, and my doubts, my fears and my anxieties to You. I ask for Your wisdom, Your timing and Your peace to fill me to overflowing.

I pray, let my faith rise above fear and always rise to the occasion which illumines the darkness I struggle with inwardly. Let my life be a testimony to Your power, grace, and perfect knowledge. I thank You for being the God who can do all things, and I thank You for Your constant reminder to me that just because something is impossible for me or others to accomplish is it not impossible for You. In Your Risen and Ascended name, I pray, Amen

Praying the Promise

Then Jesus used this story to teach his followers that they should always pray and never lose hope. “In a certain town there was a judge who did not respect God or care about people. In that same town there was a widow who kept coming to this judge, saying, ‘Give me my rights against my enemy.’—Luke 18:1-3 (NCV)

Gracious and Just God, You remind us through the parable of the persistent widow that we are to pray always and never lose hope or heart.

This woman was not deterred by the judge who lacked compassion, but she kept returning until she wore him down. She was bold and persistent. She is a perfect example that will keep us from becoming discouraged or giving up when we are praying for something and getting no results from our prayers right away.

We are blessed that our God loves us unconditionally. We are blessed that our King Jesus has a compassionate heart and was willing to give His all for us and has taught us to pray with persistence and boldness! Teach us to come before You with boldness, to lift our voices in faith even when answers seem delayed. Strengthen our spirits when discouragement whispers and help us trust that You hear every cry for justice, every plea for mercy, and every prayer for hope and provision.

Lord, make us steadfast like the widow, unyielding in our pursuit of righteousness, provision, healing, answers, and change. May our confidence that You are faithful and true increase with every prayer. May our persistence in prayer draw us closer to You, and through our prayers may we learn Your perfect will for our lives and our lives begin to reflect Your justice and compassion even more.

Thank You for never tiring of teaching us Your ways and helping us learn about perseverance. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who stirs our heart to pray continually so we can learn that God’s faithfulness is the heart of God. We ask this in the name of Jesus who taught us to pray and never give up. Amen

  Praying the Promise

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it—Genesis 4:7

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word which teaches and guides me. In Genesis 4:7, You remind us that we have a choice. The devil does not want us to feel we have a choice, but we do. We can do what is right and find acceptance or we can let the sin that is crouching at our door control and rule over us. Every day these same two choices and paths present themselves to us.

Father, I humbly ask for Your strength and wisdom to choose what is right in every moment.

I pray, help me to master the temptations that try to overtake me, not by my own power but through Your grace and presence in my life. Teach me to rely on You, to seek Your guidance, to pray continually, to step back from a situation and breathe giving you a chance to speak to my heart and mind. Please give me the power and desire to walk in obedience to Your will.

May I be a source of encouragement to others who struggle, showing them the hope and freedom found in You. Thank You for Your patience and love even when I mess up, fail, falter, may the wrong decision and poor choices. Thank You for reminding me though I am a work-in-progress and am not perfect, I am being transformed by the power of Your Holy Spirit. I trust in Your mercy and ask for Your help to live a life that pleases You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

  Praying the Promise

When the Son of Man comes again, he will shine like lightning, which flashes across the sky and lights it up from one side to the other—Luke 17:24 (NCV)

Jesus, our Risen and Ascended Lord and God, You have made it clear what it will be like when You return to earth. You assure us there will be no mistake. We won’t have to guess what’s happening and we won’t be able to avoid or escape the judgment You come to administer to everyone living at that time. You also said life will be normal as we know it. People will be eating, drinking, marrying and giving their children to be married (17:27). We will be buying, selling, planting and building (17:28). It will feel like an ordinary day and ordinary times. We can be sure all the things that take place all over this world will be happening there will be violence happening, abuses will be taking place, theft and corruption will be going on but also acts of kindness and love.

Since we don’t know the exact day all this will happen, as Your followers, grant that we will be found steadfast in faith and living the kind of life pleasing to God in heaven. Give us pure hearts, and even though it’s impossible for us to live perfect lives or be sin-free, may we live humbly, confessing our sin to God our Father—not taking anything for granted or living pridefully.

Even though we are not to stop living and turn to doing nothing or becoming lazy, may we live with an awareness of Your return so we can be ready and influencing others to live the same way. In Your most Holy and powerful name we pray. Amen

  Praying the Promise

When one of them saw that he was healed, he went back to Jesus, praising God in a loud voice. Then he bowed down at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. (And this man was a Samaritan.)—Luke 17:15-16 (NCV)

Loving and Merciful God,

As I reflect on the story of the ten lepers once again, I am reminded of Your boundless compassion and healing power. Just as these men cried out, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us,” because they recognized You as the One who could heal their condition, I too come before you with a humble heart, I too am seeking Your mercy and grace and healing for my life.

Lord, I thank You for the ways You have already touched my life, (so many ways I could never count). I thank you for the blessings I often take for granted, (more times than I can remember). I pray, help me to be more like that one leper who returned to give thanks. While the world around me is talking about fate and Karma and self-willing, may I recognize Your hand in every good thing that happens to me and comes my way. I pray, teach me to live with a heart that is filled to overflowing with gratitude always mindful of Your presence. Not just in my life overall, but my day to day, every moment of my day.

Once again, I am asking that my little mustard seed faith becomes strong, of good quality, so that I always trust in Your will, even when the path ahead is uncertain. Just as You told the healed man, “Your faith has made you well,” may my faith in You bring healing, peace, certainty, and salvation to my soul.

Jesus, I pray, guide me to walk in Your ways, fill me so I can love others as You love me, and may I always return to You with praise and thanksgiving in my heart and soul for all You do. In Your holy name I pray, praise and give thanks. Amen

  Praying the Promise

Then Jesus used this story to teach his followers that they should always pray and never lose hope—Luke 18:1 (NCV)

Heavenly Father, help us to be a people of persistent prayer. In our times of joy, it’s not hard to pray with gratitude. It’s during the times of trials, sickness, darkness, and tribulation that we need Your strength to pray with hope. We pray, in our times of sorrows help us to pray with a heart that anticipates healing. We pray, give us the strength to pray and keep on praying, to set our face continually and not grow weary or discouraged.

When we are faced with delays, help us to trust in Your perfect timing and sovereignty. When we feel overwhelmed, remind us that You are always listening and that our prayers matter to you and You come to help us carry our heavy loads. We ask for grace to approach You with faith and expectation, never losing heart, but resting in the knowledge that You are a loving and attentive God.

Thank You for the instruction given in Your Holy Word and the stories You used to make teachable moments that impacted the faith of all who were present. We are reminded by the words of Jesus in Luke 18:1 that we always should pray and not lose heart. Thank You for pointing it out to us when we are coming close to the danger zone and in danger of losing hope and giving up on prayer that You don’t work within our timetable and the soul that learns to wait on You and in You is blessed beyond measure.

Going Deeper:

  • Ask yourself, is there anything you can truly achieve by yourself? Are you diligent to approach the throne of God with persistence and trust or do you give up too soon or too easily?

Praying the Promise

Some of the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the kingdom of God come?” Jesus answered, “God’s kingdom is coming, but not in a way that you will be able to see with your eyes. People will not say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ because God’s kingdom is within you.”—Luke 12:19-21 (NCV)

Gracious Lord, I thank You for the gift of faith that makes me whole. Just as Jesus spoke to the one who returned in gratitude, saying “Rise and go; your faith has made you well,” (Luke 17:19) I lift my heart in thanksgiving for Your healing presence in my life and the many ways You heal my life, making me more aware than ever of presence and movement throughout the earth and in my individual life.

Help me to remember that Your kingdom is not something distant or hidden; it’s not something far off, but alive within me and among us. Teach me to see Your reign in acts of love, in moments of peace, and in the quiet strength You place in my spirit each day.

When I am tempted to look inside myself for signs of Your power, remind me that Your Spirit dwells within, guiding me, comforting me, and calling me to live with compassion and courage; this is a different kind of life, distinct from those in the world around me. May my life reflect the truth that the kingdom of God is here—present in every breath, every prayer, every act of kindness.

Lord, continue to develop my spiritual eyes and perception. May my gratitude deepen my faith and let my faith draw me closer to You. May I rise each day with a heart open to Your presence walking in wholeness, joy and peace., In Jesus’ name, Amen
