Praying the Promise
Therefor I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship—Romans 12:1
Jesus Lord, I come before you today, deeply reflecting on this Word. I ask You, by the mercies of God, that I present my body as a living sacrifice, holy, and acceptable to You, which is my reasonable service. Jesus, help me to live a life that reflects God’s love and grace, and to serve others with joy and purpose.
So often, we can look at what Paul writes here as something that is austere: strict in manner, attitude or appearance. Rigid and puritanical. As though You are asking us to give up all comforts or enjoyable things. We believe our “spiritual act of worship” must be unpleasant and painful. Some take up near starvation paths, eating only enough to stay alive. Some define this kind of “God-pleasing” worship as being something that means foregoing any kinds of financial benefits or profitable. We pray that You will teach us and help us to understand.
When we offer our bodies as living sacrifices, so that our life is holy and pleasing to You, we are committing to a life of prayer, study of Your word, devotion and worship.as our spiritual act of worships we can commit to serving others, utilizing the gifts and talents You have knit into us. using our natural talents and spirit-given gifts never seem like work because they are joyful to us. Help us to put our gifts and talents to use mor and more, Lord.
You already know God, that anything too harsh or strenuous or bitter will not hold up for very long, not for extended periods of time. You have not called us to tortuous living or service that only angels could accomplish, but to a life of serving You which is also through things we are well-suited for and release oxytocin which is healing for our bodies and mind.
Lord, I’m so grateful for your mercies. Take my life and let it be dedicated to You. I pray my life is a reflection of Your love and mercy and grace and that my service to You—which is from the depth of my heart—is acceptable to You. I realize—thankfully—that I don’t have to be miserable in my work or service in order to please You and that brings joy to my heart!
In this attitude I am no longer conformed to the way the world and those who have no understanding look at this Word, but I know I can serve You and my service will be acceptable even when I’m happy and feeling joyful in my service. I ask You to bless my service, bless my spiritual act of worship that it may be fruitful and bless others as well. Amen
